God Help The Girl was a project started by Neil Hannon of The Divine Comedy in 2009. It began as a musical experiment drawing from French ye-ye pop and chamber music, eventually becoming a band with Catherine Ireton on vocals and keyboards. They released their self-titled debut album that same year, which included songs like 'Pretty When The Wind Blows' and 'Come Monday Night.'
Their sound had a dreamy, introspective quality that didn't always fit mainstream tastes, but it found an audience. They put out a few more records, including a soundtrack for a 2012 film also called God Help The Girl, and their final album Animal in 2014 before disbanding.
Some of their other songs, like 'Funny Little Frog' and 'I'm In Love With The City,' show the range of their melodic approach. The project was relatively short-lived, but those records are still around for anyone who wants to hear what Hannon was exploring outside of The Divine Comedy.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
