God Machine

God Machine formed in the late 1990s with Joel Cadbury on vocals and lyrics, John Wills on guitar, Ian Stewart on bass, and Simon Scott on drums. They released three albums: 'Hymns for the Broken' in 1998, 'Cadence & Cascade' in 2001, and 'Heaven in Hiding' in 2004. Their sound drew from alternative rock and post-punk, with Cadbury's writing often circling themes of isolation and melancholy.

Songs like 'Alone' and 'Bad Dreams' carried a particular weight, built around atmospheric guitar work and Cadbury's introspective delivery. The band's catalog stayed relatively small, and they weren't active for very long, but those three records developed a following among listeners drawn to that kind of moody, textured rock.

Personal struggles and label issues were part of their story, and Cadbury's own experiences with depression seemed to feed directly into the material.
