God or Julie formed in San Francisco during the 1990s alternative rock scene, with Julie Ristau on vocals and guitar, Randy Guss on guitar and vocals, Brian Hupka on bass, and Scott Mercer on drums. Their sound pulled from post-punk and alternative influences like Pixies and Throwing Muses, built around driving guitars and Ristau's ethereal vocals. They released their self-titled debut in 1995.
Their 1997 album 'Feral' included the song 'Say Your Last Goodbye,' which became their most recognizable track. Other songs like 'Being Human' and 'Bury Me' showed their blend of brooding atmosphere and melodic guitar work. They put out two more albums, 'Lost in the Air' in 1999 and 'Love and Murder' in 2001, before disbanding in 2002.
