Editor's note

GOD's quiet, steady Korean indie rock

A Portuguese-Korean indie rock band with a small but distinct catalog of songs.

If you're new to GOD, 'Ae Soo' and 'Bothongnal' give you the feel. They're straightforward, guitar-based songs that don't try too hard.

GOD's music feels like a steady, unassuming presence in Korean indie rock. Songs like 'Ae Soo' and 'Bothongnal' have a quiet, lived-in quality that doesn't shout for attention but sticks around. They've built a modest catalog that feels more like a series of notes than a grand statement.

The band formed as a Portuguese-Korean project, releasing songs across the late 2010s and early 2020s. Their work includes tracks like 'Jayu' and 'Babo' that suggest a consistent, low-key approach rather than dramatic shifts.

Archive material and source history

GOD formed in 1999 as a Korean rock band with five members: Son Ho Young on lead vocals, Yoon Kye Sang on bass, Kim Tae Woo on drums, and Park Joon Hyung and Danny Ahn on guitars and vocals. They released a series of albums titled Chapter 1 through Chapter 5 between 1999 and 2003. Their song '0%' came out in 2001.

Yoon Kye Sang left the band in 2004. The group faced some criticism early on for their style, which didn't quite fit the typical K-pop mold of that period. Songs like 'Sky Blue Promise' and 'Babo' show the range they worked with.

They weren't a conventional act, and that seemed to work for them. Their music found an audience without needing to follow every trend.
