Godspell

Godspell began as a theatrical production created by John-Michael Tebelak and Stephen Schwartz in the early 1970s. They based it on parables from the Gospels, using contemporary music and humor to make the stories feel immediate. The original cast included performers like Lamar Alford, Robin Lamont, Gilmer McCormick, and Joanne Jonas.

Stephen Schwartz wrote the music and lyrics, which included songs like "Day By Day," "Beautiful City," and "All Good Gifts." These became the show's most recognizable pieces, often performed separately from the production itself. The soundtrack captured the musical's blend of folk, rock, and pop styles.

While some religious circles questioned its portrayal of Jesus as a modern, charismatic figure, the show found audiences in many countries. It was translated into multiple languages and staged internationally, though its core remained those simple parables set to Schwartz's accessible tunes.
