Editor's note

Goo Goo Dolls, from Buffalo punks to radio staples

A Buffalo trio that found its voice with 'Iris' and kept writing songs for decades.

If you only know 'Iris,' check out 'Name' from 1993. It's got that same earnest pull, just a little rougher around the edges.

They wrote 'Iris' for the 'City of Angels' soundtrack, and that song became a radio fixture that still gets played. It's not their only hit, 'Name' and 'Give a Little Bit' show they could craft a hook that stuck around. Even later tracks like 'Miracle Pill' prove they never really stopped making records.

They started in 1986 playing local gigs in Buffalo. The 1995 album 'A Boy Named Goo' had 'Iris,' which changed things, and they kept putting out albums like 'Dizzy Up the Girl' and, much later, 'Miracle Pill' in 2021.

The Goo Goo Dolls started in Buffalo, New York in 1986. They were a trio with John Rzeznik on vocals and guitar, Robby Takac on bass, and Mike Malinin on drums. Their early years involved playing local gigs and working on their sound.

Things shifted in 1993 with the album "Superstar Car Wash," which included the single "Name." That momentum carried into 1995's "A Boy Named Goo," which featured the song "Iris." That track became a major radio hit and defined much of their public profile for years. They followed it with albums like "Dizzy Up the Girl" in 1998 and "Gutterflower" in 2002.

In 2013, Mike Malinin left the band and was replaced by Brad Fernquist on drums. They've kept recording since, putting out albums like "Boxes" in 2016 and "Miracle Pill" in 2021. Songs from that later period include "Miracle Pill" and "Over & Over."
