Background notes

Archive material and source history

Goops formed in São Paulo around the mid-2000s as a trio with Fernando Badauí on vocals and guitar, Felipe Novaes on bass, and Júlio Andrade on drums. Their sound pulled from indie rock, samba, and funk. They broke through in 2007 with the album 'Por Onde Andei,' anchored by the single 'Cerveja,' a playful track about beer that became a hit in Brazil.

After that, they kept making albums that mixed Brazilian rhythms with more current sounds. They won a couple of Latin Grammys for Best Brazilian Rock Album. In 2013, bassist Felipe Novaes left and was replaced by André Almeida. Their lyrics sometimes addressed social and political topics, which drew some criticism alongside the acclaim.
