Archive material and source history
Gorilla Biscuits formed in New York City in 1987, with Anthony Civ on vocals, Walter Schreifels on guitar, Arthur Smilios on bass, and Sammy Siegler on drums. They were part of that city's hardcore scene, playing fast and loud with lyrics that leaned toward the positive side of things. Their song 'Start Today' became one of their best-known tracks, giving the band's 1989 album its title.
They put out a handful of records in a short span, including the 'Start Today' LP and the 'New Direction' EP. The band's lineup shifted after drummer Sammy Siegler's death in 1990. Other songs like 'Stand Still' and 'Cats and Dogs' show their style, direct, energetic hardcore with a clearer vocal delivery than some of their peers. Walter Schreifels would later play in bands like Quicksand.
