Their debut album 'Child Is Father to the Man' came out the following year. The band's sound mixed rock, jazz, and soul in a way that felt both ambitious and accessible.
By 1970, Governor had a different lineup with Chuck Rainey, Bobby Colomby, Larry Willis, and Lew Soloff. That year they released their second album, named after the song 'Blood, Sweat & Tears,' which became their most recognizable work. The record had a more polished approach than their first, and it found a wide audience.
Internal tensions and substance use were persistent issues for the group. Clayton-Thomas left in 1973, and Governor's activity became sporadic after that. They're remembered now mostly for that 1970 album and its title track, which captured a particular moment in popular music.
