Gozategi

Gozategi formed in 1987 as a Basque musical collective. They worked with traditional Basque rhythms but faced some criticism from purists who didn't like how they modernized those sounds. Their 1995 album 'Beti Mugan' included 'Ekuadorren Dago Quito,' a song that became unexpectedly popular in Ecuador.

Their lyrics sometimes addressed social and political topics, which occasionally led to protests or censorship at their concerts. Other songs like 'Adio laguna' and 'Askatu' show their range within Basque music. They kept releasing albums through the 2000s, including 'Mundu Berria' in 1997 and 'Begira Munduari' in 2005.

While their connection to Ecuador through that one song is often mentioned, Gozategi remained fundamentally a Basque band working within and expanding that tradition. Their catalog includes straightforward Basque-language titles like 'Biziki' and 'Denborak' alongside their more widely known material.
