Gralhas formed in Lisbon in 1978, with Nuno Cruz on vocals, Pedro Gonçalves on guitar, Paulo Fonseca on drums, and João Salgado on bass. They took their name from the Portuguese word for jackdaws, those noisy birds. Their debut single "Pancada" came out in 1979, a raw punk track that caught attention for its energy and its lyrics about police brutality and social injustice.
They kept putting out albums through the early and mid-80s, like "Século XXI" in 1980 and "Psicose" the following year. Other songs from that period included "Terrorismo" and "Heróis do Mar."
They released a few more records before the decade was out, including "Matar Saudades" in 1983, "Mundial Punk" in 1984, and "Sketches of Spain" in 1986. The band's sound was straightforward Portuguese punk, less about polish and more about getting a point across.
