Background notes

Archive material and source history

Gran Cuñado formed in 1997 with three members: MC Javier "Javi" Carmona, DJ Antonio "Toni" Muñoz, and percussionist Juan "Juanito" García. Their song "El Hip Pro" became something of an anthem, giving a name to the style they were working in.

They released their debut album, also called "El Hip Pro," in 1999. It was followed by "Mestizo" in 2002 and "Evolución" in 2005. Their music combined Spanish rhythms with hip-hop, which drew criticism from some traditionalists and hip-hop purists at the time.
