Archive material and source history

Grant Lee Phillips started out fronting the trio Grant Lee Buffalo in the early 1990s, with bassist Paul Kimble and drummer Joey Peters. Their first album, "Fuzzy," came out in 1993, followed by "Mighty Joe Moon" a year later. The band broke up in 1999, and Phillips began releasing solo records, starting with "Ladies' Love Oracle" in 2000.

His songs often have a quiet, folk-leaning quality, with fingerpicked guitar and lyrics that lean toward introspection. You can hear it in tracks like "Mona Lisa" and "Beautiful Dreamers." He's put out several solo albums since, including "Virginia Creeper" in 2004 and "Walking in the Green Corn" in 2012.

Phillips was born in Stockton, California. Some of his early musical influences included The Beatles, The Byrds, and Neil Young.
