Gravy Train formed in San Francisco toward the end of the 1960s, with Robert "Gravy" Tremaine on vocals and guitar. Their debut album in 1971 was called 'Bring My Life On Back To Me,' which gave them a title track that became a hit. They put out a few more records in the early 1970s, like 'The Blues Train' and 'Fire and Rain.'
Their sound leaned on blues and rock, with Tremaine's rough voice over a steady rhythm section. Some of their other songs include '(Ev'rybody do) The Thingy' and 'Burger Baby.' The band had a full lineup with James "J.D." Davis on bass, William "Billy B" Blake on drums, John "Juke Joint" Johnson on keyboards, and Daniel "Saxman" Snyder on saxophone.
Tremaine struggled with drugs and alcohol, and his temper caused friction within the group. Their lyrics and shows sometimes drew criticism, and they faced legal issues over royalties. They released albums into the late 1970s and had a compilation in 1980, with later recordings like 'Comeback' in 1995.
