G.R.C. Escola de Samba União Imperial is a samba school from Rio de Janeiro that formed in 1937 in the Triagem neighborhood. Their artistic director Luiz Fernando de Souza, known as Luizinho, helped shape their sound. The group is known for their samba enredos, the theme songs created each year for Carnival parades.
Their 1997 samba enredo 'Meu Destino É Ser Feliz - Carnaval, Uma Paixão Nacional' became particularly well-known, though it drew some criticism for how it depicted African deities. Other notable enredos include 'Samba Enredo 1978 - Ontem, Hoje e Sempre' and 'Samba Enredo 1984 - Vira Gira, Vem Girando'.
