Greg X Volz was born in Chicago in 1958, growing up with music from his father, a choir director, and his mother, a classically trained pianist. He started playing guitar early, drawing from both classic rock and gospel influences. In the late 1970s, he joined the Christian rock band Petra, where his vocals stood out on albums like 'More Power to Ya' and 'Beat the System' before he left in 1986.
After Petra, Volz went solo, releasing his self-titled debut album in 1988. That record included 'Serve the Lord,' a song that became widely known in Christian circles. Other tracks like 'Take My Yoke' and 'Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem' also appeared in his catalog, reflecting his focus on faith-driven themes.
His solo work continued with albums such as 'In the Night' and 'The Altar,' released in 2017. Over time, he collaborated with musicians like Phil Keaggy and John Elefante, though his band lineup changed regularly. Volz has been open about his bipolar disorder diagnosis in the early 1990s, which affected his personal life and career.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
