Gregg Rolie was born in 1947 and started playing piano in Seattle. In the late 1960s, he joined Santana, where his Hammond B3 organ work and vocals became part of their early sound on albums like their 1969 debut and 1970's 'Abraxas'.
He left Santana in 1972 to form Journey with guitarist Neal Schon. Rolie's keyboards and singing were central to the band's early West Coast rock style, appearing on songs like 'Any Way You Want It' and 'Feeling That Way.' He left Journey in the late 1970s, rejoined briefly in the 1980s, and departed again in the early 1990s.
Rolie has also released solo material, including the 1985 album 'Gregg Rolie' and 1995's 'Roots,' which features songs like 'Don't Wanna Be Alone Tonight' and 'One Of These Days.' He has worked with other musicians including Eric Burdon and Johnny Winter.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
