G.R.E.S. Acadêmicos do Cubango is a samba school from Rio de Janeiro that creates samba enredos for Carnival.
They've produced samba enredos on various historical and cultural subjects. Their 2004 entry 'Cubango É Shopping, No Mundo do Toma Lá, Dá Cá' addressed consumer culture, while 2015's 'A Realeza Africana de Niterói' focused on African heritage in the region. More recent work includes 2018's 'O Rei Que Bordou o Mundo' and 2020's 'A Voz da Liberdade'.
The school has been active for decades, with songs dating back to at least 1983's 'Metais e Pedrarias Que Embelezam o Brasil'. Their 2003 samba enredo honored educator Cândido Mendes. The group continues to participate in Rio's Carnival competitions, creating new samba enredos each year that reflect Brazilian history and social themes.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
