G.R.E.S. Gigante da Colina formed in 1966 in the Mangueira neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro. They're a samba school known for their participation in Rio's Carnaval parades, where groups compete with elaborate themed performances and original songs called samba enredos.
In 1984, their samba enredo 'O Mundo da Fantasia' was disqualified from the official Carnaval competition at the Sambódromo. They returned to win the Sambódromo competition in 2001 with 'O Morro da Mangueira,' a celebration of their neighborhood's history.
Their 2014 competition entry, 'Samba Enredo 2014 - República Federativa do Bra"Z"il Que Deu Certo,' also won at the Sambódromo. The group has worked with Brazilian musicians like Caetano Veloso, Jorge Ben Jor, and Gilberto Gil over time.
