G.R.E.S. Independentes de Olaria is a samba school from the Olaria neighborhood in northern Rio de Janeiro. They formed in 1929 when local musicians and dancers came together around samba.
Their 2020 samba-enredo, "O Acólito do Rei - As Memórias do Padre Perereca," drew attention for its subject matter about a legendary priest known for unconventional sermons. The song explores spirituality and folklore through the lens of their community.
Some listeners praised the composition's originality, while others found the lyrics potentially irreverent. The school maintained their artistic approach through the discussion that followed.
Other recent samba-enredos include "de Canto Em Canto, Te Conto Um Conto" from 2019 and "Janaína, a Índia Que Virou Sereia do Mar" from 2018.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
