G.R.E.S Mocidade Independente do Coroado formed in 1966 when residents of Rio de Janeiro's Coroado favela came together to create a samba school. They worked with limited resources and faced discrimination from wealthier areas, but built a local following who saw their music as an expression of resilience.
In 2009, "O Canto de Iemanjá" was criticized by conservative groups for its portrayal of the Afro-Brazilian sea goddess as a figure of liberation. Their 2019 song "Samba-Enredo 2019" became an anthem against racism and discrimination, helping them win a championship title at the Rio Carnival that year.
They've released albums including "Axé, A Voz do Povo" in 1996. The group continues to perform samba-enredo, the narrative samba style developed for Carnival parades.
