Grupo Afroson

Grupo Afroson formed in Medellín during the 1990s, drawing from the Afro-Colombian rhythms of the Caribbean coast. Their sound pulls in cumbia and salsa, with a straightforward urban feel that avoids overproduction. The 1995 track 'Colombia Llego Tu Hora' gives a clear sense of their approach, direct rhythms and lyrics that lean toward social commentary.

They've worked with artists like Rubén Blades and Juan Luis Guerra, which points to their standing in certain Latin music circles. The lineup has included Alfredo Gutiérrez on vocals, Juan Carlos Coronel on percussion, and Cesar Mendoza on keyboards, though the group's membership has shifted over time. Their recordings from the late '90s, such as 'Son de Tambó' and 'Ritmo del Barrio', kept to that same blend of traditional rhythms and contemporary arrangements.

Their music found listeners outside Colombia, partly because that fusion of Afro-Colombian styles with accessible production travels easily. They didn't reinvent the forms so much as deliver them with a consistent, uncluttered energy that works on a dance floor. The social themes in some of their lyrics resonated in places where those messages mattered, but the rhythm usually came first.
