Grupo Bailaço formed in the early 1990s with Carlinhos Brown on vocals and percussion, Nego Joe on bass, Pepa Oliveira on guitar, Davi Moraes on keyboards, and Marquinho Osó on percussion. Their debut album 'Baile na Favela' came out in 1994, mixing samba with funk and reggae. The 1996 album 'Uma Nova Paixão' gave them their signature track of the same name, which became popular during a period of political tension in Brazil.

They followed with 'Músicas para Churrasco' in 1998 and 'Pôr do Sol' in 2000, which had a more reflective tone. A live album, 'Bailaço Ao Vivo', was recorded in 2002. Songs like 'Prometo Que Não' and 'Marquinha de Biquini' show their range from earnest ballads to playful party tunes.

Some traditional samba listeners initially resisted their style, but the band kept playing it their way. Their lyrics sometimes touched on social issues, which drew both support and criticism. They didn't make many albums after the early 2000s, but the music from that period still gets played at gatherings and on Brazilian radio.
