Grupo Black Sambal formed in Porto Alegre, Brazil in the early 1990s, with Almir Rogério on vocals. Their debut album came out in 1993, and the single "Aonde Está?" got some attention.
They kept recording through the late 1990s and 2000s. The 1999 album "Vou Cuidar de Mim" had a title track that became something of an anthem. The group's sound mixed samba with funk and soul, and later touched on hip-hop and reggae.
They released several more albums, including "Nação Negra" in 2002 and "Samba de Verão" in 2005. A live album came out in 2008, and "Roda de Samba" followed in 2012. The lineup included Beto Souza on guitar, Luciano Leão on bass, Fábio Lessa on drums, and Alex Júnior on percussion.
