Grupo Bom de Onda formed in 1988 in Salvador, Bahia, starting in the Calabar neighborhood. Vocalist Almir Borges led a group of friends who mixed samba-reggae, axé, and pop into something that caught on locally. Their debut album 'Axé Bom de Onda' came out in 1990 on the Bahia Music label.
The track 'Salve a Mocidade' from that first album became a national hit. The band's lyrics sometimes touched on social issues and life in the favelas, which drew both support and criticism. They kept recording through the 1990s, with albums like 'Pra Todo Mundo' in 1991.
