Grupo Cali formed in Cali, Colombia in 1995, led by pianist and arranger Jairo Varela. Their debut album, 'De Cali Pa'l Mundo,' came out that same year. The band's sound was built on salsa dura and tropical music, and they developed a following for energetic live shows.
In 2003, the album 'Cicatrices' included the track 'Chica Sexy,' which became a major hit across Latin America. The song's catchy melody and provocative lyrics drove its popularity, though it also drew criticism for how it portrayed women. Other songs from their catalog include 'Me Volvieron A Hablar de Ella,' 'Amor de Chat,' and 'Cumbia Compañera.'
Lead singer Alex Manga was arrested in 2004 on drug possession charges and later left the group. Grupo Cali continued releasing albums like 'Salsa Nocturna' and 'El Sonido de Cali,' and kept touring, though they faced legal disputes over music rights. The band's lineup included vocalists like Adalberto Puente and Yuri Buenaventura at different times.
