Grupo Cultural Exaltação ao Samba de Enredo formed in 1977 in the Riachuelo neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro. They started as a working-class samba group dealing with the usual early struggles of limited money and places to play.
Their 1987 song 'Seca No Nordeste' became their most recognized work. The lyrics, written by samba composer Ernesto dos Santos, addressed a severe drought in Brazil's northeast, giving voice to the people affected. It's the track people still know them for.
The group's lineup has changed over time, with original members including Xiquinho on vocals and composers like Sombrinha, Donga, and Calça Larga. Sombrinha left in 1995. Their music often touched on social issues like poverty and inequality, staying rooted in samba de enredo traditions.
