Grupo da Serrinha came together in Rio de Janeiro during the 1990s. The original lineup included vocalists Salgadinho and Serginho do Porto, guitarist Bira Presidente, keyboardist Pretinho da Serrinha, bassist Mazinho do Banjo, and percussionists Sereno, Cabeção, and Carioca.
Their debut album was called 'Tanto Faz,' which also became the title of their hit song. They followed it with albums like 'Acorda, Povo,' 'Ao Vivo no Morro da Serrinha,' and 'Serrinha em Evidência.'
In 2004, there were accusations that the melody for 'Tanto Faz' had been plagiarized from another composer. The matter was settled out of court, and the accusations were later retracted.
