Grupo Gamei formed in Rio de Janeiro in the late 1990s with founding members Waguinho, Marrom, and Marcelo Rodrigues. They started playing samba and pagode in local bars before their 1998 debut album "É Hoje" brought wider attention. The title track from that album, often paired with "Explode Coração" as "É Hoje/Explode Coração," became their most recognizable song.
Their sound carried through albums like "Explode Coração" in 2000 and "Samba Show" in 2003. Waguinho left the band in 2008, but Marrom and Marcelo Rodrigues continued performing with other musicians. The group has included members like Bruno Reis on percussion, Marcelo Mello on cavaquinho, and Levi Prandi on surdo.
In 2017, Grupo Gamei publicly distanced themselves from a former member after a video surfaced containing racist remarks. They've maintained a presence in Brazilian music with songs like "Foi Um Rio Que Passou Em Minha Vida" among their recorded work.
