Archive material and source history

Grupo Generación formed in Lima in 1989, led by musician Pepe Vásquez. They worked with cumbia rhythms but blended them with other sounds, which didn't sit well with some traditional listeners at first.

Their song "Causa Ne Ñaña" connected with people who lived through Peru's internal conflict. In 1996, they put out an album called "La Caldera" that mixed cumbia with salsa, rock, and Andean folk music. Tracks like "Mburikao" and "Tetâgua Sapukái" came from this period.

Pepe Vásquez sang lead and fronted the group. They toured in Latin America, the U.S., and Europe. Other songs people remember include "Regalo de Amor" and "Pedro Canoero."
