Grupo Paquera formed in São Paulo in 1994, led by vocalist and songwriter Vander Lee. Their sound mixed samba and pagode with R&B touches, and they found their biggest hit with the 1990s single "Por Amor a Gente É Capaz." That song became something of an anthem in Brazil, a straightforward love song that connected with a wide audience.
They released a steady string of albums through the 1990s and 2000s, simply titling them Grupo Paquera, Paquera 2, and so on up through Paquera 8 in 2008. The band's lineup included Vander Lee along with musicians on percussion, cavaquinho, guitar, bass, and drums.
In 2000, the group was involved in a legal dispute over the rights to "Por Amor a Gente É Capaz." Some of their lyrics also drew criticism at times for their content. They kept playing and recording their blend of Brazilian rhythms and pop for over a decade.
