Grupo Paralellu formed in 2003 in Rio de Janeiro, started by three childhood friends: Gabriel "Gava" Silva, Pedro "Pira" Costa, and Marcus "Marcão" Vinícius. They came up playing in the city's streets, where samba and funk were part of the local sound.
Their first album, "Quem Pegou Pegou," came out in 2005 and caught on quickly. The title track became one of their best-known songs. The group's lyrics sometimes addressed social issues and life in Rio's neighborhoods, which drew both listeners and some criticism.
They kept putting out records over the next decade, including "Não É Pra Qualquer Um" in 2007 and "Sou Quem Sou" in 2010. The three original members stayed together through those years, with Gava handling most of the vocals.
