Grupo Pegada de Macaco formed in Salvador, Bahia in 1997. The original lineup included vocalist Júnior Pegada, percussionist Alisson Macaco, bassist Fofão do Cavaco, and drummer Pedro Bala. They worked in a style that mixed pagode, axé, and samba.
Their first album came out in 1998 with the track "Claro Que Eu Quero." They kept recording through the early 2000s, putting out records like "Samba de Primeira" in 2002 and "Raízes" in 2004. Another song people remember is "Lágrimas De Sangue."
Some of their lyrics touched on social and political topics, which drew criticism from conservative listeners. There were also rumors about the members' personal lives. The band's personnel shifted a bit over time, with Léo do Cavaco joining on bass later on.
