Grupo Respaldo formed in Tijuana in the early 1990s, with Ricardo "El Güero" Castro on vocals. Their debut single "El Raro" caught on quickly, mixing rock and reggae with Latin rhythms in a way that felt fresh at the time. The band's lineup included José Luis "El Pechu" López on guitar, Carlos "El Chino" López on drums, and Gilberto "El Tortuga" Mora on bass.
They released several albums through the 1990s, including Borracho y Loco in 1993 and El Disco del Pueblo in 1995. After Mora's death, Faustino "El Tino" López joined on bass and Javier "El Cuete" López added accordion. Their 2001 album El Raro shared its name with that early hit.
Later songs like "No Iba Solo" and "Tus Promesas" showed the group continuing to work in that same blended style. Their sound never quite fit neatly into one category, which drew some criticism but also kept them distinct from other bands coming up around the same time.
