Grupo Só Damas formed in Rio de Janeiro in 1998 as an all-female samba group, which was unusual in what was traditionally a male-dominated scene. The founding members included Amanda Costa, Nega Duda, and Simone Soul. They released their debut album 'Só Damas' the following year.
The group's music blended samba with other styles like rap and funk. They put out several albums, including 'Deixa Falar' in 2002 and 'A Música de Nossas Vidas' in 2008.
Later members of the group included Elen Oliveira, Cláudia Costa, and Tatiana Oliveira. They were sometimes mentioned alongside Dona Ivone Lara, an earlier samba composer, as part of a lineage of women in the genre.
