Background notes

Archive material and source history

Grupo Um Brilho a Mais formed in 1997 in Salvador, Brazil, with childhood friends Léo, Netinho, and Dan. Their music pulled from samba, axé, and reggae, and they built a following around Léo's vocals, Netinho's guitar work, and Dan's basslines. In 2001 they released their debut album, also called 'Cheiro de Amor,' which included the title track and another single, 'Farol das Estrelas.'

That album did well on Brazilian charts, and they followed it with 'Um Brilho a Mais' in 2003 and 'Pra Sempre' in 2005. Their song 'Cheiro de Amor' became a staple, and another track, 'Moreninha,' also got attention. In 2004, Netinho left to go solo, leaving Léo and Dan to find a new guitarist and adjust their sound.

At one point there were allegations of plagiarism around their song 'Me Faz Feliz,' though the details are thin. They kept playing and recording after that, and 'Cheiro de Amor' stayed in rotation as a summer and beach favorite in Brazil.
