Guarda Popular formed in 1993 in Rio de Janeiro, with Marcos Sacramento on lead vocals and songwriting, João Bosco on guitar, Pedro Senna on percussion, and Sérgio Souza on bass. They started playing samba and Brazilian folk music, and their first album, Raio X do Samba, came out in 1996.
Their song 'Com o Tempo Esse Amor' from the 1999 album Domingo got a lot of radio play in Brazil. Other tracks like 'Atirei o Pau No Grêmio' and 'Poltrona 36' also became part of their setlists. In 2003, they released Samba da Feira, which leaned into traditional samba rhythms.
The band didn't make a big deal out of it publicly and kept recording, with another album called Samba Pop following later.
