Archive material and source history
Yvette Guilbert was a French cabaret singer who performed during the Belle Époque. She made her debut at the Chat Noir cabaret in 1885, known for an unconventional style that included simple gowns and black gloves.
She worked with composers like Claude Debussy and Erik Satie, interpreting their avant-garde pieces. Among her recordings are songs such as "L'éloge des vieux," "A Grenelle," and "Je suis pocharde." The song "L'éloge des vieux," with lyrics by Pierre Dupont, became particularly associated with her.
Guilbert was born Emma Laure Esther Guilbert in 1865 and faced financial difficulties early in life. She retired from performing in her later years and died in 1944.
