Gummo

Gummo formed in Naples in the mid-1990s, mixing Neapolitan folk sounds with hip-hop at a time when that combination wasn't common. Their track 'Dialéto' came out in 2007 and caught attention for its straightforward use of local dialect over beats, giving a name to their approach. The group included rapper Lucariello, producer Sha One, and vocalist Monica Sarnelli.

Their songs like 'Instinto' and 'Madre' often dealt with everyday life in Naples, touching on social issues without much fanfare. They worked with other Neapolitan artists such as Enzo Avitabile and Clementino, staying connected to their local scene rather than aiming for broader Italian pop. The albums 'O' Zampugnaro' and 'Balla o Muor' showed them sticking with this blend of traditional and contemporary elements.

Gummo's music operated in a specific space, Neapolitan hip-hop with folk touches, without trying to become a national phenomenon. They kept making music that reflected where they were from, using the dialect and sounds of their city as their main material.
