Gums formed in 2002 in Buxton, England, with Sam Martin and Tom Shrimpton as childhood friends starting the band. They put out their first album, "Bone Machines," in 2004, which included the track "Don't Give Up." That song became something of an underground staple for them.
They released three more albums after that: "Powder" in 2006, "In the City" in 2008, and "Season's Greetings" in 2011. The band's lineup included Dan Moore on bass until 2009 and Steve Halliwell on drums from 2008 onward.
Their music had a lo-fi quality that some critics initially dismissed, but it found listeners who responded to its directness. Martin's vocals carried a particular vulnerability that suited the material.
