Editor's note

Gustavo Cerati, from Soda Stereo to solo atmospheres

The Argentine frontman who shaped Latin rock and then turned inward.

For the full arc, listen to "De Música Ligera" and then something like "Tu Medicina." It's all there.

Cerati's name is tied to Soda Stereo anthems like "De Música Ligera," songs that defined a generation of Latin American rock. His solo work, with tracks like "Tu Medicina," drifted into more layered, reflective spaces. The later resonance of "Adiós" after his illness added a quiet, unintended weight to his catalog.

He started with Soda Stereo in Buenos Aires in 1982, leading the band through its peak years. After they disbanded, he released solo albums beginning with "Bocanada" in 1999, exploring moodier, atmospheric sounds until his stroke in 2010.

Gustavo Cerati was an Argentine singer-songwriter who first gained attention as the frontman of Soda Stereo, a band he formed in Buenos Aires in 1982 with bassist Zeta Bosio and drummer Charly Alberti. They became one of Latin America's most popular rock acts, known for songs like "De Música Ligera" and "Persiana Americana." After Soda Stereo disbanded, Cerati started releasing solo albums in 1999, including "Bocanada" and "Fuerza Natural."

His solo work often leaned into more atmospheric and introspective territory, with tracks like "Adiós" and "Crimen" showcasing his knack for moody, melodic songwriting. In 2010, Cerati suffered a stroke that left him in a coma for four years; he died in 2014. The song "Adiós," recorded before his stroke, later took on a poignant resonance for many listeners.
