Archive material and source history

Gwen McCrae was born in Chicago in 1943, and her father was a church organist. She sang in church growing up, and in the late 1960s she joined the Chicago vocal group The Five Stairsteps. She left that group and started her solo career in 1970.

Her debut album 'Movin' On' came out that year and included 'Keep The Fire Burning,' which became her signature song. She recorded other tracks like 'Girlfriend's Boyfriend' and 'All This Love That I'm Giving' in the 1970s, working with a backing band called The Pacesetters. She put out albums including 'Gwen McCrae' in 1972 and 'Love for Sale' in 1974.

McCrae's voice had a clear, soulful quality that worked well on both upbeat dance tracks and slower songs like 'Lead Me On.' She recorded duets with singers including James Ingram and Peabo Bryson later in her career.
