H-521 formed in Porto Alegre, Brazil in the early 2000s, a four-piece with Rodrigo Tavares on vocals and guitar, Pedro Schmidt on drums, Paulo Costa on bass, and Humberto Borges on percussion. Their name came from "Humanos do Século XXI", Humans of the 21st Century. They worked in a mix of rock, reggae, and funk, and their debut album "Aprendendo a Viver" arrived in 2005. That record's title track, along with songs like "Contra Mão" and "Siga Seu Caminho," gave them an early foothold.
In 2008, Tavares was arrested for drug possession, which brought some unwanted attention. The band kept going, though, and Paulo Costa eventually left in 2012, replaced by Gustavo Bass. They put out more albums like "Falar Pra Quê?" and "O Jogo," touring through the 2010s before their pace slowed later in the decade.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
