H-78 formed as a Brazilian rock band in the late 1970s, with Samuel Rosa on lead vocals and guitar, Chico Amaral on guitar, Renato Rocha on bass, and Marcelo Bonfá on drums. Their self-titled debut album came out in 1982, mixing hard rock, prog rock, and folk elements.
They built a reputation for intense live shows with extended improvisations, developing a loyal following despite conflicts with record labels. Over the next two decades, they released albums like 'Dentro da Noite' in 1987, 'Na Terra do Nunca' in 1989, and 'O Olho do Furacão' in 1995. Their sound gradually incorporated funk, soul, and electronic touches while keeping social themes in songs like 'Minha Ilusão' and 'Nada mais importa'.
By the 2000s, they had put out records including an acoustic album in 2003 and 'Catálogo' in 2009. They kept touring and recording, maintaining a presence in Brazilian rock without the dramatic claims of being the most influential band of all time.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
