Editor's note

H-Blockx, the German band that mixed hip-hop and rock

A Münster group that found radio play in the mid-90s with their crossover sound.

If you want to hear what they were about, 'Go Freak' and 'Countdown To Insanity' are the place to start. That's the sound that got them on the radio.

They were one of those German bands that caught a moment when rock and hip-hop were starting to talk to each other. Songs like 'Go Freak' had that rap-rock energy before it became its own radio format. They played Rock am Ring and kept at it long enough to have a real catalog, even if critics sometimes called it too commercial.

They formed around 1990 in Münster, naming themselves after a Hamburg prison block. Their first album 'Time to Move' came out in 1994, and 'No Fiction' in 1996 had more reach. After records through the 2000s like 'Fly Eyes,' they took a break before the original lineup reunited in 2018.

H-Blockx came together in Münster, Germany around 1990, with Henning Wehland on vocals, Sascha Bunge on drums, Peter Sawatzky on bass, and Steffen Wilmking on guitar. They took their name from a prison block in Hamburg. Their first album, 'Time to Move,' came out in 1994 and got them some radio play.

A couple years later, the 1996 album 'No Fiction' had more reach, and they played at Rock am Ring. Songs like 'Countdown To Insanity' and 'Go Freak' mixed hip-hop and rock in a way that felt fresh at the time, even if some critics thought it was too commercial.

They kept putting out records through the 2000s, including 'Fly Eyes' and 'Discover My Soul,' before taking a break. The original lineup got back together in 2018.
