Habeas Corpus

Habeas Corpus formed in Brazil in 1975 with Pedro Bial on vocals, Luiz Carlos Maldonado on guitar, Marco Mattoli on bass, and Luiz Fernando Oliveira on drums. Their self-titled debut album came out that same year and included the song "Fascismo Nunca Más," which became an anthem for activists.

Their sound mixed rock with Brazilian folk and popular music. Over time, other musicians passed through the band, including vocalist Renato Russo, who would later form Legião Urbana. They kept releasing records through the late 1970s and early 1980s, with titles like "A Volta," "O Calor da Rua," and "De Frente."

Their lyrics were openly political, and that sometimes got them into trouble. In 2018, they were accused of inciting violence after performing "Fascismo Nunca Más" during an election campaign. Other songs in their catalog include "En El Mejor De Los Mundos," "Una Cuenta Pendiente," and "Mirando Hacia Otro Lado."
