Archive material and source history

George Frideric Händel was born in Halle, Germany in 1685. He traveled to Italy as a young man, where he absorbed the melodic style of the Italian Baroque. He later settled in England, where he became a prominent composer for the court.

Händel wrote numerous operas, including "Rinaldo," "Giulio Cesare," and "Alcina." In 1741, he composed the oratorio "Messiah," which contains the "Hallelujah Chorus." Another piece from that work, "He Shall Purify," also remains well-known.

His music blends Italian melodic invention with German harmonic structure. While he faced competition from other composers during his career, his works have endured as staples of the classical repertoire.
