Hantzzx formed in Portugal in 1985 with Paulo Pereira on vocals, Carlos Mota and Pedro Almeida on guitars, João Fernandes on bass, and Rui Pinto on drums. They started playing in clubs around that time, building a following with their heavy metal sound. Their first album, 'Metalucifer,' came out in 1987.
They followed that with 'Sentença' in 1990 and 'Além da Amizade' in 1993. The title track from that last album became something of an anthem for Portuguese metal fans. The band faced some pushback from conservative groups early on, but kept playing shows that were known for their energy.
Paulo Pereira has been the consistent member through various lineup changes over time. Other musicians like António Pinheiro and Paulo Silva have played guitar in the band at different points. They've done some work with other Portuguese artists including Rui Veloso.
