Happy Birthday formed in Osaka in 2006 with Shiori Eguchi on vocals, Kenichi Nakajima on guitar, Shuhei Nakagawa on bass, and Yuji Mitani on drums. They released their debut single "Kimi Dattara" in 2009, which became a national hit in Japan.
That song won them the Song of the Year award at the 52nd Japan Record Awards. Bassist Shuhei Nakagawa left the band in 2012, and in 2015 they faced plagiarism accusations regarding another song called "Arigatou."
