Editor's note

Hard-Fi's suburban anthems and restless return

The Staines band that soundtracked British radio in the 2000s, then came back with a different sound.

If you want the classic sound, start with 'Hard To Beat'. For where they ended up, try 'Watch Me Fall Apart' from the later stuff.

For a few years there, you couldn't turn on British rock radio without hearing 'Hard To Beat' or 'Suburban Knights'. Their debut 'Stars of CCTV' captured a specific moment of mid-2000s suburban restlessness. Even their comeback album 'Internal Landscapes' in 2021 showed they weren't just repeating the old formula.

They formed in Staines in 2004 and broke through with 'Stars of CCTV' the next year. After a Brit nomination for 'Once upon a Time in the West', they went quiet for a while before returning with live shows in 2018 and that 2021 album.

Hard-Fi formed in Staines-upon-Thames in 2004 with Richard Archer on vocals, Kai Stephens on bass, Steve Kemp on drums, and Ross Phillips on guitar. Their debut album 'Stars of CCTV' came out the following year, with the title track and songs like 'Hard To Beat' and 'Suburban Knights' becoming staples of British rock radio in the mid-2000s.

Their second album 'Once upon a Time in the West' arrived in 2007 and earned them a Brit Award nomination for Best British Album. Phillips left the band in 2010, but they continued with 'Killer Sounds' in 2009 and 'Decoy' in 2011 before going on hiatus around 2014.

Hard-Fi returned in 2018 with live shows and released 'Internal Landscapes' in 2021, which represented something of a shift from their earlier guitar-driven sound.
